North Devon U13s v West Devon U13s 2011
North Devon Under 13s v West Devon Under 13s

Sunday 15th May, Chulmleigh Cricket Club

North Devon 197-9 (C Mitchell 70*, S Lathwell 34, T Gidney 24; D Goodey 3-18, M Borbon 3-21, J Richardson 2-17) beat West Devon 196-5 (D Hussey 63, C Barriball 59, M Borbon 36*) by 1 wicket

Winning the toss and electing to bat the West scored 196 – 5 in their 44 overs. The ever present, ever patient Borbon dug in for the entire innings, batting through to make 36 n.o. Setting the anchor at one end allowed his opening partner Hussey, to play more freely in making a fluent 63 at the other, as the pair put on 105 for the first wicket. This provided the perfect platform for Barriball to settle himself before launching into the bowlers for the last third of the West’s innings. He racked up a quickfire 59 that looked likely to take his team well past 200.

However, 6 good overs at the end of the innings from Drew and Lathwell went for just 18 as the West ended on 196 – 5. Drew was the pick of the North’s bowlers, his accuracy picking up 1 - 17 off his 8 overs.

Chasing 200 is never an easy task and the excellent Goodey (3 – 18)  struck in the first over of the North’s reply, removing Drew caught behind. A tidy partnership developed between Lathwell and Gidney for the second wicket taking the score to 70 – 1 at the first drinks break after 14 overs. After the break saw Goodey return in an effort to break the partnership and he duly obliged, flattening Lathwell’s middle stump immediately after the restart. Borbon (3 – 21) followed up his marathon stint at the crease with a tidy spell of bowling to remove Gidney and Huxtable and from 72 – 1 and in command,  the North limped to 88 – 4.

Mitchell and Knill added 28 before the latter succumbed to the dreaded leg stump long hop and with the North on 116 – 5 the West had the upper hand.

What followed was one of the best innings chasing down a target that you could wish to see as Mitchell masterminded his team’s way to victory with a stunning 70 n.o. He manipulated the strike brilliantly to ensure his weaker batting partners faced as little as possible as he scored the vast majority of his side’s last 80 runs himself, mixing safe boundaries with intelligent singles. Fittingly, after one last wobble that brought the North’s 9th wicket Mitchell hit the winning run to seal the North’s first win in 5 matches.
